Glasgow
I have just moved here so I am gradually finding all the vegan
friendly shops and restaurants. This will be a bit of a work in progress with
new places being added as I discover them. There is quite a busy vegan scene
here with The Glasgow Vegan
Network being central to this. Check out their website and join their e
group.
Food Shops
Grassroots, 20
Woodlands Road - Both a veggie supermarket and a deli their shelves and
chillers are well stocked. They sell absolutely everything from vegan coffee
creamer that doesn’t curdle to organic veg, olives, monster sized sandwiches
and a good selection of vegan cheeses and ‘meats’. Don’t forget their wines
and beers or the cookery courses that they run.
Roots and Fruits, 455-457 Great Western Road and 351
Byres Road - The larger of the two shops is on Great Western Road with the
health shop and the grocers being side by side. The choice of fresh veg is
outstanding and the shop has a deli counter as well as the usual dried and
chilled vegan products. The smaller shop on Byres Road combines the two but
still manages to offer everyday vegan products and the same choice of fresh
fruit and veg.
Lupe Pintos, 313 Great Western
Road - Sells everything you need to make mexican food. This is where I buy
my smoked chipotle chillies for the ultimate refried beans and masa harina for
making corn tortillas and tamales. Also sells very very hot sauces. The staff
here are lovely and friendly too.
Restaurants
So many yummy places to eat!!
Mono, - An exclusively vegan
restaurant offering specials, burgers. blt sandwiches, spicy chips, pasta,
cheesecake... the list goes on. Very reasonably priced they also brew their
own beers, have their own record shop and have a small area where they sell
vegan products
Stereo, 10 Kelvinhaugh
Street - The sister restaurant to Mono it offers similar food and like
Mono bands play live here
Grassroots Cafe ,
93-97 St Georges Road - Round the corner from grassroots shop is their
cafe which caters for vegetarians and vegans. They offer an excellent choice
of vegan meals and only marginally more expensive than mono. Quite small
though so get there early to avoid the disappointment of not getting a
seat.
Peking Inn, 191 Hope Street - Not far off Sauchiehall street
this Sichaun and Beijing restaurant has a good choice for vegans. They do
very good value business lunches and pre theatre meal deals. Dishes
include 'salt and pepper crispy Bean Curd, Kung po Mixed Vegetable, and Bean
Curd or vegetables with sichuan, chilli bean sauce or garlic chilli
sauce'...and much more!
Little Italy, on Byres
Road - They offer soya milk for their coffees ( just ask as they don't
make a big deal of it). They also have a vegan sandwich and a couple of vegan
pasta dishes...handy for a quick takeaway.
Tinderbox, also Byres road- Provide soya milk for the
coffees at no extra charge. Very good.
