Brighton
I spent a weekend in Brighton and tried to cram in as many places as possible( and i didn’t manage as many as i wanted to) so here I will highlight some of my favourites although there are many many more places that cater for vegans. The Guide to Vegetarian Brighton is the best book for all the hotels, restaurants and cafes which cater for vegans and at £2.99 you can’t go wrong. HOTELS I stayed in two different hotels even though i was just there for a weekend as i managed to coincide my holiday with a political party conference... what fun!Penny Lanes, 11 Charlotte Street: Cater for vegans so just let them know when you book and they will make sure that you get soya marg, soya milk and a full vegan breakfast if you so desire. Everyone is very friendly and the rooms are pleasant. Seaspray, 25 New Steine: Also cater for vegans and the same applies as above. Just let them know that you are vegan when booking. All the rooms are en suite and it is friendly and lovely. Restaurants and Cafes Eating out is the least of your problems when in Brighton. The problem is really where. I didn’t get to nearly half of the places I had wanted to and one of the restaurants, Troggs, was closed for refurbishment so i never got to go although i have heard great things about them. Here are a handful to get started on. The George, 5 Trafalgar Street: Vegan pub grub! Relax with a beer and choose from an extensive menu which is mostly vegan. They do a fabulous sunday roast too. Food For Friends, 17-18 Prince Albert Street: A bit hit or miss unfortunately. Some of the food is divine, such as the sweetcorn fritters with chilli sauce, but some is just ok. Its not bad food at all just not outstanding. Right in the centre of town though so very easy to get to. Terre a Terre, 71 east Street: ok a deep breath before i start on this one... I love this place, I adore it. I would sell my soul to be able to eat here more often. I love it so much that i get friends to take back menus if they go down without me so that i can feast my eyes on it. Its more expensive than the usual restaurants but pay it!! Look at the menu... on it it has ‘Cha Cha Bindi Kichadia’ and ‘Yabba Jabba Beefy Tea’ just two of the many items. Don’t know what they are? neither do I! Who cares?! Order it anyway. I can personally recommend the Cha Cha. Described as Utthapum, southern Indian urad crumpet, topped with curry leaf chillies & red onion, sitting on citrus okra & coconut cumin cauliflower with cardamon capsicum sas, dhudi gourd crammed full of mangosteen dahl finished with gooseberry cha cha. Now I don't know anywhere else that you would get that! But you want to know about the yabba Jabba Beefy Tea too don’t you. Well it is... Steamed and stuffed ginger bun, served with smokey mushroom miso beefy tea & fried yabba noodle pocket sitting on seared shiimegi, tot soi & leafy dry spice, finished with soy pea yuzu pesto & aubergine pickle. But of course does it have chocolate cake? Well, no, but it has something even better ‘Rain Vodka Cherry Cioccolata Churros’ and that's vegan doughnut straws with dipping chocolate and vodka soaked cherries to us mere mortals. Anyway go as I can’t praise it more... well I can but don’t get me started. SHOPS Vegetarian Shoes, 12 Gardner Street: The home to the fabulous Vegetarian Shoes. Go in and try on lots of shoes in the knowledge that there isn’t a scrap of leather in them and that they are ethically made. I came away with a pair of biker boots and a rather delightful pair of red Cheetahs. They also sell non leather jackets and belts. Infinity Foods Co-operative, 25 North Road, an amazingly good health food shop in fact think of it as more a mini supermarket. It has packages, tins, frozen, chilled and fresh vegan food. A wide selection of goods. Montezuma’s Chocolates, 15 Duke Street: Another must! You have to go here. Ask at the counter and the friendly staff will direct you towards all your vegan chocolate wants and desires. A lovely selection of vegan bars, truffles and chunks! |
