    crop circle

Avebury is a wonderful little village. It is small but has much to see in and around it. The village itself is built inside a stone circle and many of the houses are built from the stones. One warning, Get used to helicopters! Military helicopters seem to patrol the area and will stop and hover overhead checking on what you are up to. So if you think that they are out to get you then you are right! The best part of my visit to Avebury was the chance to see two crop circles! One took quite a trek to get to and resulted in sunburn but it was well worth it. Bear in mind though while traipsing through the fields that it is a farmers income so walk in the lines and watch out for helicopters again.

    Sights To See

Avebury Stone Circle: This site explains more about the stones and shows pictures. The stones themselves are quite large ( which didn’t come out in my photos... they just look like little stones!)

    silbury hill

Silbury Hill: Just outside of avebury you are not allowed onto the hill itself for... well, no real reason it seems! Occasionally people will make a break for it and try to climb it ( its not very large) but helicopters will come down and persuade you that you would really rather not do that. Which of course means that people want to do it more to see why they don’t want them there.

West Kennet Long Barrow: Further out of avebury and at west Kennet ( bit obvious really). You park your car in a lay by and take a walk through the corn fields and up to the long barrow. From above it looks like a sausage shaped mound. Inside it is a dark stone construction which isn’t as large on the inside as it is outside ( it’s that reverse Doctor Who tardis effect again). It’s very peaceful inside and an ideal spot for some quiet meditation. Although, it is worth pointing out that most areas around avebury and glastonbury are excellent meditation spots.

    Restaurants and Cafes

You might think that there wouldn’t be anywhere that caters for vegans in such a small village but you would be severely mistaken.

    more chocolate cake

National Trust Cafe, Just beside the shop and a pond they cater very well for vegans. They have soup and hot dishes some of which are suitable and more importantly chocolate cake! Not as rich as the chocolate brownie in Glastonbury but it goes perfectly well with a pot of tea and some soya milk. In fact the general consensus was that as this cake was less sickly more could be eaten therefore it was better. Very good, I just wish that all National trust cafes could be this good.

Crop Circle Cafe, at Cherhill : This is also a great cafe for vegans. They have snacks, salads and meals and of course chocolate cake. It also has internet access for the crop circle connector and shows photgraphs and locations of all of the current years crop circles
