Aberdeen
My home town so you would think I know all the vegan places
there. Unfortunately cities keep changing but my information is accurate to two
weeks ago (as of the 4th June 2003). I go back fairly often so can check up on
places. Be warned though some of these places below do sell dairy and meat.
FOOD SHOPS
Mediterraneo,
40-42 St Andrews Street - An excellent small Italian deli which sells
marinated olives and fresh breads. Check with staff for vegan products.
Grampian
Health Foods, Crown Street -One of two very good independent
health food shops. Sells dried, chilled and frozen vegan products. Also sells
vegan toiletries like American brands Jason and Kiss My Face.
Natures Larder, 60 Holburn Junction- Possibly the smallest
health food shop in the world with food stacked right up to the ceiling. Sells
dried and chilled products. Limited frozen foods. It’s possible to come across
some quite bizarre foodstuffs in here!
The Spice Shop, 530 George Street - Fresh Asian vegetable
and every spice and dried pulse you would need to make any curry. If you like
spicy food then this is the place.
RESTAURANTS
Nargile-
Fabulous Turkish food. The starters offer the biggest selection for vegans
although there are quite a few mains too. Sadly none of the desserts are
suitable. Prepare to GORGE yourself! They also have a branch in Edinburgh
Soul and Spice
Cafe 15/17 Belmont Street - The most amazing African and
Carribean restaurant. Check their website for opening times as they can be
slightly erratic sometimes.
The Beautiful Mountain Belmont Street - A previously small sandwich
shop which has expanded to include a take-away downstairs and a cafe upstairs. They have a selection of vegan sandwich fillings. Check with staff. They
also always have soya milk available too.
